‘Ohana Field Trip
Today was the big field trip with all of the Hawaiian ‘Ohana classes. (For those of you who haven’t seen Lilo and Stitch, ‘Ohana means family.) There were about 8 classes total, I believe, so there was enough of us to fill up 5 buses. We journeyed to a bunch of different places, but I had already been to a few of them. To open up the day (at 6:45 in the morning) we all sang a Hawaiian mele (song), which is something commonly done in Hawaiian schools. The first stop was to Kilauea at Volcanoes Park, where we sang another mele and learned about Pele and the different plants growing in the area. After leaving the volcano, we stopped at a lot of different places in Ka’u. Ka’u is the region at the southern end of the Big Island. We stopped at two different beaches along the way and a park, and every place we stopped at we were taught about the area. We also stopped at the Punalu’u Bakery (The southernmost bakery in the US), which I’ve been to before, but they have yummy food so I was happy about that. All in all it was a long day, much of it spent on a school bus and places I’ve been to already, but it was still fun.
